Pros – performance/handling, luxurious interior, versatility
Cons – Premium pricetag, real-world fuel-economy, tech complexity
In the pursuit of vehicular excellence, raw figures only tell part of the story. As a motoring reporter, I seek more than performance metrics — I search for a machine that resonates with engineering depth, emotional engagement, and functional luxury.
The BMW X5 G05, particularly in its recently refreshed LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) guise, presents a fusion of dynamism, technological sophistication, and executive comfort. Since its global debut on June 5, 2018, the G05 has matured significantly, with the 2023 facelift elevating its aesthetic and dynamic appeal to new heights.

Driving Dynamics
The meeting of power and precision is evident from the moment one enters the X5’s meticulously crafted, driver-focused cockpit, it is clear this SUV has been engineered with intent. The layout is ergonomically honed, the materials rich and tactile, and the digital interface both intuitive and responsive.
Once the engine roars to life — particularly in the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid configuration — the fusion of combustion and electric power asserts its presence with authority.
Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, seamlessly integrated with a high-output electric motor. Together, they generate 489 hp and 700 Nm of torque. Power delivery is managed through the revered ZF 8-speed Steptronic transmission, delivering near-seamless shifts and responsive throttle modulation. The result? A surprisingly agile and swift SUV that dispatches the 0–100km/h dash in under five seconds.
Yet, what truly sets the xDrive50e apart is its electric range — between 60 to 70 kms in real-world conditions. This makes short urban commutes entirely emissions-free. On paper, BMW claims a staggering 150 km/liter (353 mpg) equivalent. While real-world efficiency may vary, especially in colder climates, the plug-in hybrid system’s flexibility adds an impressive dimension of practicality to this performance SUV.
Design Evolution
The X5 exudes subtle aggression while delivering elegance. The LCI refresh is more than cosmetic — it redefines the X5’s visual language. The iconic kidney grille has been subtly reduced in height by 35 mm, giving the front fascia a sleeker and more assertive stance. The arrow-shaped LED DRLs, which double as turn indicators, offer a sharper, more technical edge to the SUV’s presence.
At the rear, BMW has integrated slimmed-down LED tail lights with intricate fiber-optic elements, giving the X5 a futuristic aesthetic when illuminated. Optional design packages — including the M Sport Pro trim — enhance these visuals with gloss black elements, aerodynamic enhancements, and larger alloy wheel options that underscore the vehicle’s athleticism.
The 2025 X5 is 4,935 mm long (13 mm longer than its xDrive45e predecessor) 2,004 mm wide and stands 1,720 mm tall (25 mm shorter) while tipping the scales at 2,495 kgs (xDrive45e had an unladen weight of 2,035 kgs).
Interior Craftsmanship
Form meets function is what the interior is all about. Step inside, and you’re enveloped by a cabin that exudes refinement and innovation in equal measure. The curved display — which houses both the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system — is powered by BMW Operating System 8, delivering crisp visuals and seamless interaction. Voice and gesture control, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and over-the-air updates push the X5 into the upper echelons of infotainment technology.
Practicality hasn’t been sacrificed. The electric split tailgate simplifies cargo loading, while a generous boot capacity ranging from 500 to 1,720 liters makes the X5 suitable for everything from weekend getaways to daily family duties.
Optional upgrades, such as air suspension, heated and ventilated massage seats, and Bowers & Wilkins audio, elevate long-distance comfort to limousine levels.
Ride and handling
The X5 deftly combines power and agility, thanks to its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and adaptive suspension. It is as comfortable on winding roads as it is in urban environments.
Adaptive dampers help the suspension negotiate Bangkok potholes and road bumps, which are communicated to my behind but its chassis keeps things in check, with little if any, body roll.
Though it has been raining cats and dogs lately, the X5 still manages to blow you away with its refined performance on the tarmac; and uncompromising visibility complemented with precise steering.
The ride is surprisingly nimble and very manageable thanks to its adaptive two axle air suspension setup, though it quickly reminds you that it is a big car in tight streets.
Verdict
The BMW X5 G05 LCI is not merely an SUV — it is a showcase of what modern automotive engineering can achieve when performance, innovation, and elegance intersect. Despite its premium pricing and technological learning curve, it remains one of the most engaging and versatile offerings in the luxury SUV segment. Whether carving through mountain roads or gliding silently through the city on electric power alone, the X5 delivers an experience that is both exhilarating and sophisticated.
For discerning Thai drivers seeking a vehicle that doesn’t just transport, but transforms every journey, the X5 continues to be a benchmark. It is, quite simply, a Sports Activity Vehicle with soul…an Executive Athlete for the electrified era!
