Pros – Comfort & driving experience, interior cabin space, fuel efficiency

Cons – Large for B-roads, complex technology, price

The BMW 5 Series has long been hailed as a top-class executive saloon and in this review we take the latest model for a test drive to see whether it still appeals to buyers in Thailand.

Generally speaking, BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) is an outstanding luxury brand from a motoring perspective, and I have been longing to pen a test drive – since my last BMW 7-Series trip to Russia many years ago.

Fast forward to 2024 and the latest iteration of the iconic 5-Series, in the guise of the mid-sized luxury sedan 520d M Sport Pro (G60) priced at Bt3.779 million, is seamlessly negotiating the Rama II tarmac hampered by BTS construction on route to Hua Hin.

The 520d with its BSI Standard package and 3-year 60,000km warranty, should be mentioned in the same breath as the imported Bt3.99 million Mercedes-Benz E-Class E220d (CKD variant later this year), while had Volvo not announced the end of its diesel production last year – we would probably see an amped up diesel version of the S90 instead of the plug-in hybrid recharge T8 AWD Inscription priced at Bt3.29 million.

In recent years, we have seen BMW blend the classic allure of internal combustion engines with cutting-edge electric vehicle technology as fuel-saving hybrids have seen market share increasing steadily.

Performance

According to the German automaker, the 520d represents an evolution in both efficiency and performance, being tailored to meet the demands of modern automotive enthusiasts.

Under the hood, it boasts a smooth-revving B47 four-cylinder turbo diesel powerplant mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination is engineered for optimal fuel efficiency, minimizing both consumption and CO2 emissions while delivering loads of torque for robust acceleration.

The engine produces 197 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque delivered flat between 1,500-2,750 rpm, giving the 520d the flexibility for most driving conditions.

Despite a slightly increased weight compared to its predecessor, the 520d achieves a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds and is capable of reaching a top speed of 233 kph.

Meanwhile, average fuel economy is claimed at 18.5km/liter while CO2 and NOx emissions are rated at 142g/km and 0.133g/km respectively.

Notably, the 2024 520d integrates BMW’s Mild Hybrid 48V electric system that assists the engine in several scenarios.

For example, it not only supports the diesel engine during acceleration, with 11hp and 25Nm of added boost, but also aids in energy recuperation during braking, further optimizing fuel consumption.

As a result, acceleration is punchy from any speed range, while vibrations and noise from the diesel engine is well-isolated to keep cabin noise down to executive car levels.

Unlike traditional setups, it features a generator in place of a conventional starter, coupled with a powerful built-in starter-alternator connected to a 48-volt electrical system powered by a 0.48 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The 520d’s Auto Start/Stop system fires up the engine smoothly. This not only minimizes engine vibrations but also provides a seamless transition from standstill to motion, enhancing driver comfort and control.

I was impressed with the performance and efficiency of the 520d, with the improved 8-speed gearbox getting newly-optimized ratios for better responsiveness and acceleration.

Needless to say, paddle shifters add to the fun when driving on winding country roads, in addition to the front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension set up.

Highway overtaking can be done confidently and the 520d never feels sluggish as you floor the throttle, while stopping power comes from vented discs both front and rear.

Design

In terms of design, the 520d M Sport Pro boasts a striking aesthetic with a redesigned front grille that integrates with angular headlights.

At first the humongous kidney grille for yours truly, appears to be visually challenging and potentially, an acquired taste, so to speak.

Folks, I am not a purist by any means but I come from a generation that idolized then BMW Chief designer Chris Bangle when he presided over the fiery E36 test drive in Catalunya, Spain in 1998 – there is something artsy and convincingly cool about designers when compared to engineers.

Simply put, kidney grilles were much smaller back then.

Nevertheless, the 520d grille’s automatic opening and closing system optimizes aerodynamics while enhancing the vehicle’s visual appeal.

Yes, at the end of the day I admit I like the new large kidney grilles, which also comes with illuminated frame for a strong road presence.

The side profile is sporty, enhanced by the large 20-inch M light alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires.

The Hoffmeister kink that has long been associated with BMW design tradition is still there albeit not as visible due to the glossy black surround, while the slim horizontal LED tail lights portray a modern electrified appearance.

The M Sport Pro package adds distinctive elements such as gloss black accents, M-specific details and a beefed-up M Sport suspension. These enhancements help boost the 520d’s performance pedigree while refining its aerodynamics and visual appeal.

However, the large amount of glossy black surfacing on the lower rear bumper, sporty as it may seem, takes away the elegance from the 5 Series. The dual exhaust pipes are visible — thanks to BMW for refraining from using fake exhaust tips like those in the E-Class.

The 520d measures in at 5,060 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,515 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,995 mm, while offering a decent trunk capacity of 520 liters.

Safety credentials are affirmed by a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, attesting to its robust structural integrity and advanced safety features.

The interior of the BMW 520d M Sport Pro offers meticulously crafted design featuring a new dashboard, premium upholstery and angular patterns that extend to the door panels and seats.

Electrically adjustable sports seats up font ensure optimal comfort and support for long drives, complemented by Veganza faux leather that combines luxury with sustainability.

At the centerpiece of the interior is the curved display combining 12.3 and 14.9-inch screens, powered by the BMW operating system version 8.5.

This setup enhances user interface functionality but also integrates seamlessly with BMW’s latest navigation, connectivity, and entertainment systems. I was happy with 106.5 FM Green Wave and somehow got wireless Apple CarPlay to play my mobile phone’s playlist as well.

Verdict

My checklists for the 520d includes an eager and very punchy diesel power unit with a sweet 8-speed automatic ZF gearbox to match, appealing design and a setup that delivers excellent road manners to exceed my expectations although it seems a little pricey.

However, I have to be careful to not shoot myself in the foot with regards to its techy cabin and infotainment system – perhaps I need a longer test period with all the technology on board because all I am familiar with is the rotary iDrive controller.

It has been 12 years since I last wrote a driving impression and the Bimmer 5 Series has grown considerably: almost 70mm taller, 40mm wider and about 150mm longer, coming with a turning circle of 11.8 meters.

We are talking 7-ish dimensions if you compare numbers with 2012 7-Series models.

As I navigate the precise steering through the narrow streets and B-roads of Hua Hin, at the end of the day I am reminded that it is an executive saloon and rightfully so.

That said, I am smitten by the 520d which translates into a great job done by the boys at Munich and Rayong (BMW’s assembly plant in Thailand), to say the least!
