MG and UNEX EV has announced a collaboration to provide battery swapping technology in Thailand later this month for two EV models.

The MG EP Plus and the Maxus 7 will be offered with batteries that can be swapped within three minutes, making them ideal for private and particularly commercial use.

According to a press release from MG Sales (Thailand) Co Ltd, battery swapping technology is another approach to pushing electric vehicles into public transportation, which will help strengthen the electric vehicle ecosystem and increase the use of clean energy in business and industry groups.

“Battery Swapping Technology will help electric vehicles return to service quickly, taking only three minutes to swap batteries at the station, while the driving distance remains the same.,” the release stated. “In addition, battery swapping technology helps increase convenience in use, reduce parking time for charging, but still provides good driving performance.”

The EP has a range of 380kms NEDC (300kms WLTP) while the Maxus 7’s larger battery allows it to travel up to 570kms NEDC (450kms WLTP).

Suroj Saengsanit, vice president of SAIC Motor-CP Co Ltd, said, “The project is a collaboration between MG Sales (Thailand) and UNEX EV, the developer of the intelligent driving platform, with the goal of pushing Thailand into a clean energy transportation system. This can be achieved by developing technologies that increase the efficiency of electric vehicle usage to meet commercial usage needs and reduce limitations.

“Therefore, we have started developing battery swapping technology with the EP Plus as the first model because it is a popular model widely used in the transport sector. Currently, more than 1,000 EP vehicles are used as public transportation vehicles. Another model that is currently under development is the Maxus 7, a seven-seater e-MPV that is both spacious and comfortable, and can support group travel very well.”

Suroj said MG electric vehicles with battery swapping technology will start providing services from late April 2025, with Phuket as the first province.
