Auto sales continue to remain sluggish in Thailand, with 45,190 vehicles being sold in august, down 25 per cent compared to the corresponding month last year.

According to figures from Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), passenger car sales in August declined by 22.6 per cent to 18,305 units while commercial vehicle sales went down by 26.5 per cent to 26,885 units.

TMT vice president Supakorn Ratanawaraha said despite the overall market decline, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles have been rising dramatically. In august, xEV sales rose by 20 per cent to 17,090 units, making up 38 per cent of all vehicles sold.

“The automobile market in September is expected to remain stagnant with lower growth compared to the same period last year, which could be a result of the overall economy that is slowly recovering, as well as strict financing measures and natural disasters like the current flooding. These could all affect consumer decision making,” Supakorn said.

Toyota is the top seller in August with 17,843 units (down 14.5 per cent), followed by Isuzu with 6,145 units (down 46 per cent) and Honda with 5,005 units (down 29.3 per cent).

From January to August, total auto sales were 399,611 units, 23.9 per cent lower than the same period in 2023.
