Mitsubishi will start exporting its new Xpander SUV from Indonesia to Thailand starting this year, a move that will help the company expand its small lineup in the Thai market.
The Xpander features a 1.5-litre gasoline engine and is assembled at the new Mitsubishi assembly plant in Bekasi. Export markets include the Philippines, followed by Thailand, Vietnam and more, with an export target of 30,000 units during the first year.
Mitsubishi said this is the first time that the company is carrying out “mass-scale” export from Indonesia.
“The export of the Xpander is an important milestone in our ongoing business plan, and adds further to our strong foundation in ASEAN, which are the key drivers of our growth in the region,” said Osamu Masuko, chief executive of Mitsubishi Motors Co.
The Xpande was officially launched in Indonesia last August and has won over 66,000 customers — it was also the top-selling vehicle in Indonesia in March 2018.
The Bekasi plant has a production capacity of 160,000 vehicles per year — Mitsubishi has already approved production increase of another 10,000 units per year to in order to help meet the Xpander’s strong demand.
